Immersed in Colours & Love on Holi at Yoga Vidya School

Drenched in the colours of brotherhood and celebrating the festival of love and kindness, every year Holi brings us a reason to celebrate the victory of good over evil. It brings us reasons to relish humanity by burying hatred and enmity with each other and rejoicing in festivities and rituals. Holi is one of the most awaited and significant festivals in India. Though it is a Hindu tradition and has been a grand celebration in the country since time immemorial, it has become a global festival today.

Holi is celebrated with full vigour across the world. Whether you are in the US or the United Kingdom, you would find thousands of people celebrating the festival with all enthusiasm. This is the day when you would find streets and party venues packed with people throwing watercolours and applying gulaal on each other. And when such a beautiful festival is here, Yoga Vidya School gets all ready to get lost in the vibrancy of hues. After all, Holi unites us together and marks the arrival of the Spring season. It is also the festival that celebrates the divine love of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha.

Holi Celebrations at Yoga Vidya School This Year

When you are at Yoga Vidya School in Rishikesh for your yoga teacher training in India, you are not bound to just class lectures, academic study, or traditional learning. You get to celebrate all the festivals with full zeal and zest. Whether it is Diwali or Holi, you would find people immersed in celebrations like never before.

So, this year too on the auspicious occasion of Holi, all our students and teachers partook in the celebrations and spent their day playing with each other. The entire school was decorated with colourful flowers and garlands and the tables were ready with desserts, snacks, fruits, and of course, Holi colours. People feasted on these handmade delicacies and soon after the festive breakfast, the actual Holi celebration began. During the celebration, people hugged each other, threw gulaal playfully, and danced to exciting beats in the compounds of the school.

All of them grooved to folk songs as well as pop music and spent the day cheerfully under the open sky. It was the day of utmost joy and fun with people being tripped throughout the celebrations. They talked their hearts out with each other and made new friends. Beautiful pictures were snapped and videos were taken. This was the time when Yoga Vidya School seemed nothing less than a party venue. Those splashes of water colours and those clouds of gulaal with a backdrop of blue sky purely looked heavenly.

Once the indoor celebrations were done, they all ventured off to the banks of the holy river Ganga to take a dip in its soothing waters and bathe. Later on, a Joint Karma Yoga session was organised for students to soak in the calmness of yoga. People also went temple hopping and bowed down to the almighty god at religious sites. Some sat back and relaxed in beautiful café area of the school.

Why Holi Festival Is Celebrated in India ?

Holi is a significant Hindu festival and has been a traditional ritual for thousands of years. It is celebrated every year by burning effigies of Holika, who was the sister of Asura-king Hiranyakashipu. According to Bhagavad Purana, Hiranyakashipu was an arrogant demon king who wanted no one to worship other gods but him. However, when he got to know that his son Prahalada is an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, he got too furious and decided to kill him. He tried a myriad of ways to get rid of Prahalad but to no avail. Eventually, he called his sister Holika who had the boon of being invulnerable to fire.

However, when Holika tricked Prahalad into sitting on a pyre with her, she burned down while Prahalada survived. Since that day, Holi has been a grand celebration in Hinduism with people burning wood and sticks as Holika who represent the evil nature of a person. This ritual is celebrated on the night before Holi and is called Holika Dahan.

Did you know Holi is also celebrated to honour the love between Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha? As per Hindu legends, it is believed that every year on Holi, Krishna would go to Barsana from Vrindavan to celebrate the festival with Radha. However, upon arrival, she along with her friends would hurl sticks playfully at him and his friends. That’s the story behind the popular Lathmar Holi of Barsana. No wonder Barsana and Vrindana are two of the most popular Holi destinations in the world.
